CMS schools represent at cross country state championships

Runners from Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools were among the state’s best at the NCHSAA Cross Country State Championships, held this weekend at the Ivey Redmon Sports Complex.

Athletes from Myers Park, Ardrey Kell, Providence, South Mecklenburg, Hough, East Mecklenburg, Butler, Hopewell, and Ballantyne Ridge turned in standout performances across multiple classifications.

7A Division Highlights

In the 7A girls’ race, Brooklyn Brownfield represented Ballantyne Ridge and posted a solid 103rd-place finish (21:50.17) in her state debut.

On the boys’ side, two CMS runners placed in the top half of the 7A field — Hopewell’s Nathan Suplee clocked 16:43.20 to finish 44th, and Butler’s Jay Olin followed in 57th (16:54.22). Both were among the top finishers from the Charlotte area.

8A Girls – Myers Park, Providence, and Ardrey Kell Dominate the State Stage

The 8A girls’ championship was packed with CMS talent, with Myers Park, Providence, Ardrey Kell, and South Mecklenburg all placing multiple runners in the top 100.

  • South Mecklenburg senior Elizabeth Weltz led the way for the district, finishing third overall (18:12.75).
  • Myers Park followed close behind, led by Molly Barber (4th, 18:34.94) and Alaina Zabel (10th, 18:58.21). The Mustangs also placed Kate Stokes (29th, 19:42.64), Langston Koppang (33rd, 19:47.01), Addie Marques (35th, 19:49.90), Molly Rust (56th, 20:27.74), and Priyanka Talbot (73rd, 20:57.90).
  • Providence’s pack was equally strong, with Claire Page (12th, 19:06.62), Molly Uher (13th, 19:08.42), Clara Milheim (44th, 20:10.04), Madison DiMenna (63rd, 20:43.52), Sophia Faensen (85th, 21:35.87), Samantha Soden (90th, 22:04.08), and Kaylie Sawaya (93rd, 22:35.64).
  • Ardrey Kell placed six runners inside the top 90: Mollie Wells (31st, 19:45.23), Ahana Satija (43rd, 20:06.33), Kiana Rodriguez (65th, 20:44.25), Meghan Hastings (81st, 21:18.37), Zephyr Campbell (84th, 21:27.78), and Radnyi Karadkar (88th, 21:45.96), followed by Isabela Roldan (89th, 21:47.63).
  • Hough also posted a deep team effort with Sophia Hoogsteen (68th, 20:48.45), Juliana Mills-Zacapa (72nd, 20:52.84), Aleksa Camodeca (76th, 21:04.10), Jenna Beyerle (77th, 21:06.00), Reese Sazama (87th, 21:42.21), Maribelle Myers (91st, 22:06.00), and Ava Long (94th, 23:32.43).
  • East Mecklenburg’s Riley Ketterhagen rounded out CMS representation with a 59th-place finish (20:36.22).

It was a banner day for CMS girls’ programs — Myers Park, Providence, and Ardrey Kell all ranked among the state’s top teams.

8A Boys – Myers Park, Hough, Ardrey Kell, and Providence in the Mix

The 8A boys’ race was equally loaded with CMS representation.

  • Myers Park’s James Freeman led all CMS runners, finishing 15th overall (16:06.32), followed by teammates William Clark (37th, 16:43.53), Christopher Burns (39th, 16:47.22), Cooper Hayles (51st, 17:02.83), Vincent Williams (64th, 17:20.61), Matt Walker (82nd, 17:51.91), Bennett Parrish (91st, 18:12.40) — a consistent top-to-bottom performance that helped Myers Park secure one of the top team finishes in 8A.
  • Ardrey Kell showed impressive balance, led by Adam Dreier (28th, 16:33.15) and followed by Brecken Olander (71st, 17:27.22), Ranveer Singh (74th, 17:31.69), Greyson Scott (76th, 17:33.79), Abhay Jassal (78th, 17:38.47), Bennett Sweetser (80th, 17:48.53), and Lucas Chiang (95th, 18:29.42).
  • Hough’s top performers included Aidan Malloy (30th, 16:34.39), Grant Collum (47th, 16:59.37), Jack Bennett (49th, 17:00.20), Will Shaffer (63rd, 17:20.42), Beckett Herbster (84th, 17:52.93), Paul Kammann (94th, 18:27.12), and Grant Bennett (97th, 19:02.18).
  • Providence again fielded a complete team, led by Tate Lewis (54th, 17:06.36), Matthew Perrone (55th, 17:07.36), Rex Naylor (73rd, 17:30.02), Paxton Young (79th, 17:47.25), Connor Fagan (86th, 17:59.55), Braxton Bradle (92nd, 18:15.89), and Andrew Blackwell (93rd, 18:19.74).
  • East Mecklenburg’s Jack Piner added another CMS top-75 performance with a 66th-place finish (17:21.08).
