CMS athletes take individual wrestling state titles

The N.C. High School Athletic Association Individual Wrestling State Championships concluded at the Greensboro Coliseum with several Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools athletes making their mark in both the boys and girls competitions.
 
After winning the dual-team state championship, Hough’s wrestling team also won the team title at the 8A individual tournament, posting 128 points. Northwest Guilford was second with 101.5 points.
 
Michael Santoro (Hough) defeated Faysal Busisou (Athens Drive) in a 4-0 decision in the 8A 106-pound first-place match.
 
Tyton Kostoff (Hough) also took home first-place honors, beating Vincent Valention (Laney) in a 10-0 major decision to win the 144-pound weight class.
 

Here’s how other Hough wrestlers completed the tournament:

  • Brandon Lefler – 2nd Place, 113-pound weight class
  • Adrian Feliciano – 2nd place, 120-pound weight class
  • Cody Bui – 4th place, 138-pound weight class
  • Vincent Grack – 4th place, 157-pound weight class
  • Amiri Mingo – 4th place, 165-pound weight class
  • Quinn Schiano – 4th place, 175-pound weight class
  • Joey Ricci – 2nd place, 190-pound weight class
Hough was not the only CMS school that had notable performances at the individual championships.
 
Colton Bogan (Providence) won the 190-pound weight class in the 8A classification, beating Joey Ricci (Hough) in a 7-3 decision.

  • Davis McLaughlin (Myers Park) – 4th place, 113-pound weight class (8A)
  • Charles Thompson (Mallard Creek) – 2nd place, 126-pound weight class (8A)
  • Colt Cambruzzi (Providence) – 3rd place, 132-pound weight class (8A)
  • Marcello Scaldaferri (South Mecklenburg) – 3rd place, 144-pound weight class (8A)
  • Khalif Rhodes (Mallard Creek) – 4th place, 150-pound weight class (8A)
  • Avery Small (Mallard Creek) – 2nd place, 215-pound weight class (8A)
  • Dacario Smith (North Mecklenburg) – 4th place, 285-pound weight class (7A)
  • Raimire Lewis-Taylor (Myers Park) – 2nd place, 285-pound weight class (8A)

Girls wrestling state championships

Providence’s Jasmine Laing won the 138-pound weight class in the 8A class after recording a fall at the 5:02 mark of the first-place match against Jada Lebron (Hoke County).
 
Riley Paden of South Mecklenburg took home top honors in the 145-pound weight class in the 8A championship. Paden pinned Sydney Simmons (Laney) at the 1:13 mark of the bout.
 
East Mecklenburg’s Aaliyah Paige won the 152-pound weight class in the 8A championship over Peyton Conway (Green Level). Paige recorded a fall at the 2:20 mark.

  • Anida Begic (East Mecklenburg) – 3rd place, 145-pound weight class (8A)
  • SeRina Byrd (Mallard Creek) – 2nd place, 165-pound weight class (8A)
  • Erykah Kirkley (Independence) – 3rd place, 185-pound weight class (7A)
  • Vanessa Lopez (South Mecklenburg) – 4th place, 235-pound weight class (8A)
